Our Services


The NDT services that we provide help to protect your assets and ensure the integrity of your tools, motors and equipment – which ultimately enhances safety and helps prevent accidents. By providing reliable, accurate NDT results, we can also help reduce costly repairs and downtime. The end result is that your company will optimize your inspection expenditures and increase profitability.

Our nondestructive testing services include specific systems focused on magnetic particle testing (MT), liquid penetrant testing (PT), ultrasonic testing (UT) and electro-magnetic inspection (EMI). From hoisting equipment to downhole tools, structural inspections, deck installation and cason inspection and much more – our inspectors can provide all the NDT services necessary to meet your individual needs.

Electro-Magnetic Inspection

EMI has been proven to be the most efficient and effective method for detecting defects on drill pipe.

EMI is capable of detecting an abundant range of defects than other testing methods, including but not limited to cracks, corrosion, pits, cuts, washouts and more. Drill Spec has portable units and a stationary unit. Portable units can be brought to location and scan the entire length of the pipe for defects. The stationary unit allows us to bring drill pipe to our yard to be more efficient. Drill Spec Services is capable of performing DS-1 Category 3,4, & 5.

Magnetic Particle Testing

Magnetic Particle Inspection is utilized to inspect ferromagnetic materials for defects located on or near surface. This technique is highly effective in detecting cracks, stress from fractures, heat cracking and other flaws. Drill Spec Services, commonly utilizes magnetic particle for inspection of Drill Collars, Hevi Wate Drill Pipe, Subs, Top Drive Inspection, handling tools and much more. Drill Spec Services is capable of performing DS-1 Category 3, 4, 5.

Liquid Penetrant Testing

Liquid Penetrant Testing is utilized to locate cracks, porosity, and other defects that are open to the surface of the material. This type of inspection can be used to inspect large areas very efficiently and will work on most nonporous materials. Here at Drill Spec Services we utilize Liquid Penetrant on Monel Collars and buttons on BOP’s.

Visual Testing

Visual Testing is always performed as the first step in any NDT Inspection. Visual Testing requires direct line of sight contact with the portion of the specimen to be inspected. Adequate illumination of the test specimen is also required as well as a thorough understanding of the nature and origin of potential defects within the test object. The inspector must also have detailed knowledge of the specifications controlling the Inspection Process in order to properly perform visual testing.

Ultrasonic Testing

Ultrasonic Testing is utilized to detect surface and subsurface defects in a wide range of materials. This form of testing is an electronic process based on sound velocity and attenuation measurements. Drill Spec Services commonly uses Ultrasonic testing on SEA (Special End Area) and welds.

Thickness Guaging

Thickness Gauging is a form of Ultrasonic testing to measure the thickness of materials. Drill Spec Services commonly uses this method to measure the thickness of drill pipe or tubing to assure it meets industry requirements according to DS-1.

Hardbanding

Here at Drill Spec Services we offer hardbanding services and application to extend the life of your tools and tubulars. By applying hardband to your tubulars or tools you can protect the assets from OD wear. We offer hardbanding services on site or at our shop – utilizing materials including Postle Duraband®, Tuffband®, Arnco 350XT™, Arnco 150XT™, Castolin Eutectic OTW13 & OTW12T.

Hardband Grinding Removal

Using our Hardband Grinding Unit we have the ability to remove old, damaged, unacceptable, hardbands; or even fixing eccentric wear hardbands. It prepares the surface for reapplication of the desired hardband material. It is sometimes necessary to remove a portion of the underlying base metal to remove all contaminates that will affect the quality of the hardbanding material after reapplication process. Traditional “plasma arc gouging” type removal processes can be costly and are capable of overheating causing problems with the integrity of the metal. By using Drill Spec Services' Grinding Unit, the temperature will never exceed 150 degrees, keeping the integrity of the metal uncompromised.
